The Muckletappers

by Roger Tiffin

This "recreational" team was knocked into some sort of shape by myself, Grot, and several others. There were several dog enthusiastic non GA's who had helped with the doggie tunnel etc, and Harry Wiggans encouraged us to run a new team, composed of bitches and some new young dogs, with Balasuaq as the leader. Suaq was becoming elderly but was up to leading the team on short jaunts from base. I made the Muckletappers' sledge bag, which depicts the Liver Building in Liverpool, my home town. I made one 7-day, 120-mile trip with the team and Ron James, travelling to Crack Depot with big detour around the new crack opening up, east along the low ice shelf, south then west around the D line to the coast, into the Bob-Pi crossing as far as flag BP 12 and then back to base, ostensibly measuring snow accumulation. I'm not sure what other trips the team did. Below are photos of the sledge bag, and the team resting on the way to Crack Depot with Ron.
